Here’s what I used to give my basket a makeover:
For this project you’ll need a basket. Any size or shape will do. I used one that I picked up at the Target Dollar Spot, but feel free to repurpose ones from around your house. You can also find cheap options at thrift stores or a garage sales.
To make the basket fit in with my fall décor a little bit better, I decided to apply a layer of Tobacco Road Voodoo Gel using a chip brush.
This gel stain will give the basket the darker color I prefer. You can paint or stain your basket with any color you like.
This is what the basket looked like after I applied the gel stain.
Once the gel stain was dry, I dry brushed the entire surface using Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in the color Cotton.
To dry brush, you’ll want to create a wash using a bit of paint and water.
Once your wash is ready, add some of the mixture to the tip of your brush.
Then offload the majority of the wash onto a paper towel.
To apply the wash, gently brush it onto the surface of the basket using light pressure. Apply layers of the wash mixture until you’ve achieved the coverage you like. The trick to this technique is to build the color, so be very gentle as you apply.
Now it’s time to fill the basket with fall décor!
I chose to create a fall arrangement with items I had around the house.
You could also use this same idea to create a gift basket by adding a bottle of wine, 1 liter soft drink or water and some snacks like picnic meats and cheese. The possibilities with this idea are endless!
Here’s the arrangement without the berry swag. You can see that it has more green and may fit into a simpler décor scheme.
And here it is with the berry swag! The sway adds a lot of color and “fall-ness” to the arrangement.
This is such an easy and affordable way to repurpose an old basket into a fresh idea for the season. Will you be giving it a try?

My crafty biz friend Lisa with Lisa’s Little Things made that particular tassel. Don’t you just love it!
Cute idea! I love how you dry brushed the lighter color on top. It’s perfect for Fall.
Yes, now I need to do one like that too. LOL
