This project started with a set of 2 x 6 x 7 inch wood blocks from my wood guys at Twin Knobs Woodworks. You can get 4 of these raw wood pre-cut blocks for only $11.00 from their online shop. It’s a great deal and an easy way to craft when you don’t have a way to cut your own wood pieces.
Begin by applying a layer of No Pain Gel Stain in Walnut to the entire block of wood.
I apply my gel stain with a clean rag.
Next, brush on some of the Best Dang Wax in Clear randomly along the edges. Also add some sporadic brush strokes in a few spots on the surface of the block.
Remember – the more wax you use, the more distressed your project will be.
Next, cover the entire block with a layer of the color Caviar and let dry.
Once dry, use a scraper to remove some of the paint.
You’ll notice that the paint will easily come off of the areas where you added the wax.
Next, add a layer of the color driftwood and let dry.
Once dry, scrape back some of the paint.
Then, add a bit of Tobacco Road VooDoo Gel Stain to darken everything up.
Simply rub this in with a clean cloth.
Next, dry brush a layer of Sea Glass over the entire surface.
At this point, I took my staining rag and rubbed over the entire piece to blend the colors together a bit.
Once that layer is dry, add another layer of clear wax along the edges and randomly all over.
Then, add a full layer of the color Fluff on the entire piece.
Let that dry and then sand lightly.
Finally, use some painter’s tape to pull away even more of the dried paint.
Just apply a piece of the tape across the surface and then it pull off.
You can see below how the layer peeled away with the tape.
Now it’s time to embellish!
Finish your project by attaching a bow using your hot glue gun.
Then add some layers of twine to the bottom of your finished piece.
I attached mine with a bead of hot glue on the back.
Then, wrap the twine around the bottom of the block about 5-7 times and then attach the end of your twine with another bead of hot glue.
Here’s the finished product! This is a great idea for anyone who loves to give personalized handmade gifts.
