Supplies you’ll need to make your own Farmhouse Style Shiplap Sign:
- Faux Shiplap Sign Blank
- Plaque Shape Wood Cutout
- Fluff Dixie Belle Chalk Paint
- Black Magic Voodoo Gel by Dixie Belle Chalk Paint
- Caviar Dixie Belle Chalk Paint
- Paint Brush
- Peace Love Family Trio Chalk Couture Transfer
- Bright White Chalkology Paste
- Small Squeegee
- Gorilla Super Glue
This design started with a Faux Shiplap Sign Blank from Twin Knobs Woodworks. The shiplap is created by cutting grooves into the board, giving it that classic shiplap look. It measures 11 1/4” wide by 22 1/2” long and 3/4” thick.
To begin the painting process, I started by applying a layer of Dixie Belle Voodoo Gel in the color Black Magic to the entire surface of the shiplap sign. I apply gel stain with a rag making sure to wipe back any excess. Gel stain is great because you can layer the product to create the exact shade you want on your piece.
Next, using a paintbrush, I added a layer of Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in the color Fluff to the surface I just stained. As I was painting, I was sure not to add the paint to the grooves of the faux shiplap board. This will help highlight the shiplap look. You can also paint the grooves white if you prefer.
While the painted layer dries, move onto painting the center plaque shape.
For this step, I used the color Caviar by Dixie Belle to paint the entire surface of the wood cutout.
Once the center plaque is dry, it’s time to add the word or words to your sign. For this sign, I used the Peace Love Family Transfer from Chalk Couture to add the word “family”.
Once the transfer was in place, I used Bright White Chalkology Paste and a small squeegee to add the wording detail.
Once you’ve applied a thin layer of Chalkology Paste to the transfer and wiped back the excess, remove the transfer to reveal the finished sign. When everything is dry, finish off the project by attaching the center plaque to the shiplap sign using an adhesive like Gorilla Super Glue.
This is what my finished product looks like in my home. It really is the perfect everyday decor piece!
You can also use wood letters to embellish the center plaque and give your sign a 3D look. You can find wood word cutouts HERE.

The possibilities are truly endless with this project! Experiment with color combos, words, phrases, dimensional elements and stencils.
