Supplies you’ll need to make a patriotic door hanger:
- Large Wood Round – 16″
- Wooden Stars
- Barn Red Dixie Belle Chalk Paint
- Fluff Dixie Belle Chalk Paint
- Tobacco Road VooDoo Gel Dixie Belle Chalk Paint
- Bunker Hill Blue Dixie Belle Chalk Paint
- Painter’s Tape
- Foam Brush
- Paint Brush
- Bandana Pattern Chalk Couture Transfer
- Small Squeegee
- Bright White Chalkology Paste
This project started with a 16″ round door hanger.
Begin by taping off the area that you want to paint blue. Then apply the paint and let dry.
Once the blue is dry, re-apply the tape and paint the other portion white.
Once the white is dry, apply tape to create the stripes. Then paint every other stripe red.
Remove the tape and let everything dry.
Once the paint is dry, apply a thin layer of Tobacco Road Voodoo Gel stain to the entire piece. This will give it a more rustic or worn look. It will also mute the colors.
Next, use a foam brush and the same Tobacco Road gel stain to add a distressed look to the edges of the piece.
After all of the distressing has been added, let dry completely before applying the Bandana pattern transfer.
Center the transfer over the surface and apply a thin layer of the white Chalkology Paste to the entire area.
Be sure to remove any excess paste and then remove the transfer.
This is what the project will look like.
Now it’s time to paint the stars.
Begin by painting them both white.
Then, add the distressing details. Distress the entire surface of the bigger (bottom) star and only distress the edges on the smaller (top) star.
Use the same Tobacco Road gel stain and foam brush for this process.
Once the stars are dry, glue them onto the round surface.
At this point, it’s best to add a spray seal, especially if it will be displayed outdoors.
Also, feel free to add a word, bow or other details to make it your own.
You can see below how the door hanger looks with a patriotic bow added to the top.
Isn’t it the perfect way to celebrate summer!
