Make your own Shiplap Sign with this simple tutorial. Add a stencil accent, wreath or other embellishment to make it your own!

I made this shiplap sign as part of a shower gift and thought it would be fun to share it with you.  This is an easy project that comes together quickly and can be personalized to fit your style.  Let’s get started!

Supplies you’ll need to recreate this Shiplap Sign:

I started this project with a Faux Shiplap Sign Blank.  You can purchase the same sign blank HERE. It measures 11 1/4” wide 22 1/2” long 3/4” thick.  The shop that I ordered it from also had an option to add a frame to the sign for an additional cost.

To create the distressed farmhouse finish for the base of my sign, I first used Black Magic Gel Stain from Dixie Belle.

I simply applied a layer of the gel stain using a clean cloth to create the level of color and coverage I wanted for the peice.

Let that base coat of gel stain dry before moving on to the next step.

Next, I used Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in the color Fluff to dry brush over the gel stain I had just applied.

This painting technique will give your piece a distressed look without sanding.

Notice I applied less paint around the edges of my board.

Be sure to let the paint dry before moving onto the next step.

Finally, I added the a stencil to my board.  I used the “A Life They Loved” transfer from Chalk Couture.

First, apply your transfer to your surface.  If you are using a brand new transfer, be sure to fuzz it before you begin.

Next, apply an even layer of Chalkology Paste over the silk screen portion of the transfer.  I used Chalkology Paste in the color Black Velvet to compliment the gel stain I had used for the base coat.

Once you are finished applying the chalk paste, remove the transfer to reveal the finished look.

This is an adorable sign on it’s own, but I decided to add a small wreath to make it a bit more special.  If you attach your wreath with a hook, you can change it out according to the seasons!
