A simple wooden tray with stenciled accents can be a show stopper in any home.  Today, I’m going to show you how I made my own stenciled wooden tray using Chalk Couture and a found tray I already owned.  Let’s get started!

Supplies you’ll need to make your own stenciled wooden tray:

This project started with a found tray that I already had at home. This is a rough piece with lots of crooks and crevices.  Going into this project I knew that it was more than likely  I wouldn’t get a clean crisp design and I’m totally okay with that.  I want a more rustic, worn, aged look anyway for this piece.

To dress up the tray a bit, I decided to add a design using the Love & Coffee Transfer from Chalk Couture.  If you look closely, you can see how I applied the transfer to accommodate the unevenness of the wood.

Once I lined up my transfer and applied it to the tray, I used Bright White Chalkology Paste and a small squeegee to add the coffee-themed design.  Also note that I omitted the top portion of the transfer, using everything from the word coffee down.

Take your time applying the chalk paste and peel it back as you go. I did each plank one at a time, taking a moment to peel back the finished portions as I went.

Here’s what the tray looked like right after the transfer had been applied.

You could leave it just like this, but remember I am looking for an aged look. So, I let it dry overnight and then sanded it back some.  Just be sure to sand a little at a time.  You can always sand more if you’d like, but once the paint is gone – you can’t go back!
