If you have purchased wood lately you know it’s A) expensive these days and B) it’s very knotty.
With that being said, you will want to add primer to any knots on your 1×10 board, especially if you are painting it. I like to spot prime the knots, let the spots dry and then prime the whole board.
Here’s the board after being spot primed and then getting a coat of primer all over.
Once the primer is dry, you can proceed with painting the board.
I used the color Whitecap for my board, but any white paint would work.
Next, you’ll need to paint the letter cutouts from your kit.
I used the color Anchor and a makeup sponge for this step.
You can use any color you like for this project. Think about the other porch décor items you will be using throughout the season and pick colors that will compliment those items.
PRO TIP: When using a makeup sponge to paint, add a bit of paint to your sponge and then use pouncing motions to apply it to the surface.
Now it’s time to add the stencil detail!
To do this, I used the Farm Charm Tile Transfer from Chalk Couture. Chalk Couture Transfers make stenciling super fast and easy.
When using a Chalk Couture Transfer you’ll need to apply the transfer to the surface, use a squeegee to add Chalkology Paste and then wipe back any excess paste before removing the transfer. Chalk Couture Transfers are reusable, so you can do multiple projects with the same pattern.
Once you’ve stenciled the entire sign surface and it’s dry, you can start gluing the letter cutouts on.
I used an instant adhesive for this step. Simply add a small bead of the adhesive to the back of the letters and then place them on the surface.
Here’s the finished product! I think it’s going to be great for all seasons.
This “Welcome” Door Hanger compliments the porch leaner perfectly! Let me show you how I made a similar one it HERE.
